F16 - Help Needed

Ok, I have not been a flight simmer for a couple of years, but the arrival of the FSX F16 persuaded me to rejoin the community. Having quickly read the manual at work today, I was somewhat disappointed that the manual told me what was available on the MFD and HUD etc, but did not specifically (for the idiot) tell me how to make it happen - just references.

So I thought I would figure it out, I put the F16 on Andrews AFB, it starts to roll forward so I look to put on the parking break and could not get the parking break switch to operate. Should it?

I was then looking how to switch on the HUD - I am clearly missing something obvious but have not had the time to find it - any chance of an idiots guide?

In the manual you show settings for views, I found the first four buttons you suggest, but where is button 31 on the X52 controller?

All help appreciated

Go down near the bottom of the manual to the checklists, and follow the before start and startup checklists. If you follow the steps, step by step, everything will operate correctly. Just take the extra time to fully read the manual. It will pay off.

Thanks for the prompt response, I have read the checklist but again this tells me what to do, not how to do it.

Heh same here as well! joys of button pressing, to turn the HUD "on" its the top left grey roller dial on the number pad just below the HUD. press that and it`ll come on, flick the switches on the panel just to the right of the joystick and that`ll turn on the rest of the hud. To turn the left and right displays on theres a big knob down in the very bottom right of the cockpit on the avionics panel, turn that then flick the switches on that panel.

Probably not the correct way of doing things by any means but thats how i got everything to light up and looking pretty without reading the manual :D

you have 4 gray weels unders the glas where your looking through, upperleft gray weell is the only one that is able to move that's the one for the hud. You also need to look completly to the far right by avionics to get the other panels to work. Lights etc... same.

Here are some quick screenshots, as i say i doubt this provides any useful information on setting them up, just turns them on to look pretty. some of the ones on the panel beside the joystick need to be clicked twice i think.

Here are some screens, pretty low quality (sorry), that at least show what a few of the more important HUD control panel switches actually do.

Personally, after giving the HUD power, all I do is add the flight path marker and the pitch ladder. (That's 2 clicks of ATT / FPM.) Some prefer to have the Velocity / Altitude / Heading (VAH) tapes on as well (1 click of VV / VAH). You'll usually see those VAH tapes on in the HUD vids you find on the internet. A second click of VV / VAH adds the Vertical Velocity scale near the altitude tape. I personally think it's far too cluttered with all of that, plus NAV info, plus target info, but hey, these are the options in the real thing. So we gave 'em to you.
