F-16 Doesn't Work

Hi folks,

Patiently downloaded and installed package. All aircraft appear in the usual menu. When you select an aircraft it tries to load and then says a 'Fatal error occured' and FSX re-loads.

I've downloaded many Aerosoft products and never had a problem before.

I'm running FSX (SP2) on a dual core machine (Vista) with a 512Mb Graphics card. My system as far as I'm aware is fully compatible.

Please help!!

Nicky

I'm having the same problem.

Once every fresh restart (Windows XP SP2 fully updated, except SP3) I get to start one flight with the F-16. The second time I try to load, I crash to desktop with FSX failed. This has never happened before. It is also impossible to select the F-16 via the Aircraft->Select aircraft menu, making it impossible to get a cold&dark start.

My specs:

Dell XPS 420 with Win XP SP2

Intel C2D E8300 non-clocked

ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 512MB(/"1024MB")

4x1GB DDR2 RAM

Mainboard... don't know, Dell's mainboard.

Flight Simulator X with SP2. Ultimate Terrain X Europe, and some other freeware 3rd party scenery addons for Norway, that shouldn't have anything to do with anything.

Please note; the error does not occur when you start the flight, it occurs when you select the aircraft! I.e. when you have chosen your tail number and livery and waiting for the free flight setup screen where you can pan and zoom the aircraft model. That's when it freezes and goes CTD.

I have never gotten CTD's before, except with the PMDG 747X in Vista (Vista was the reason).

Edit: I would like to add something positive as well! I flew it from ENAL Vigra to ENGM Gardermoen by hand and it's absolutely beautiful when it works! Flying by hand has never been this easy before. The trims are so precise and the stick is smooth as silk. The sounds are also very good. And far from what I expected; the FPS hit was minimal! I run at almost all scenery settings maxed out, maximum global textures and 1440x900 widescreen. All MFD's and HUD on with terrain showing and GPS on. It's still smooth at 20-25fps, just like I'm used to and how I like it. The PMDG's 747X is a nightmare compared to this. 5-15fps easily in that one.

Ok..... managed to get it to run a little bit by loading a different aircraft and changing to F-16 whilst 'in flight'. However there are no MFD's or HUD, they are just blank.

Any ideas??

Yeah, read the manual and see how you give them power? :P If you turn to your far right in cockpit there's a panel that reads switches to turn on MFD etc...

Edit: AVIONICS POWER Panel (Page 32) for how to turn on your MDF and INTEGRATED CONTROL PANEL & DATA ENTRY DISPLAY (Page 34) for how to turn on your HUD in the manual btw.

For those experiencing crashes, would you mind providing a little info?

1) Are you running Acceleration or SP2?

2) Are you running WinXP or Vista?

3) Can you load other planes THEN switch successfully to the F-16?

4) Does commenting out ONLY the left MFD in the panel.cfg prevent the crashes?

5) Does commenting out ONLY the HUD in the panel.cfg prevent the crashes?

XP-SP3,SP2,no Acceleration-Selecting any f-16 from main menu and I get that message box asking if I want to end the flight,continue....

Then the entire screen freezes, mouse freezes requiring task manager to kill fsx.

If I am already in free flight in a default and open the menu, select any f-16, I get the ctd message, fsx must close.

I // out the 06 in the panel.cfg and from the f-16s I have selected and after a few flights, all appears to work except of course the left mfd is black.

Jimjam, thanks for the information. Very helpful. Seems to be that this is with FSX SP2 machines only, never Acceleration. If you'd like to try an alternative, feel free to e-mail me at saprintz@gmail.com.

Thanks

Not much more  info to add here at the moment, but a couple of comments.

My situation and details are described in my post further up. 4 & 5: I don't have access to my computer today so I can't test it, but I am experiencing the crashes when I try to select the F-16 from the Aircrafts list in Free Flight menu. It crashes before I get a chance to select "Fly now!". Is the MFD/HUD rendered at this menu screen, before actually sitting in the aircraft and turning them on? In that case, maybe it is a possible cause.

Shaun:

I have not tried KSEA, but I have tried ENOL, ENGM, ENAL and EDDF. The game always crashes when I try to select the F-16 (any model, A/AM/C, any livery I've tried so far) via the Aircraft->Select Aircraft menu in-game. Both MFD's and the HUD are off by default when the aircraft is loaded (As i described in my earlier post, I can load the aircraft via the Free Flight menu once/only one time each time I restart WinXP, so I have tried the aircraft and it is fantastic!)

Also, my computer never freezes entirely like JIMJAM's does. Only the game freezes, and I get the Microsoft "The application has encountered an error and must close, would you like to report etc etc"-message.

Could a WinXP upgrade from SP2 to SP3 maybe do the trick?

Tried again this morning and can't get it to work at all now. Still crashing with 'fatal error' message. I'm not comfortable trying Finn's fix as in the past I've always made things worse when trying to manually mess with files and folders. Can you confirm a fix is on the way?

An executable hotfix is confirmed to be on the way. So it reads in the other CTD error thread in the F-16 support forum index. My personal guess would be a release sometime before or during this weekend, because Mathijs wrote in another thread that we (ver 1.00 owners) can expect the first batch of small fixes sometime around this weekend.

JUST so that the SP2 crash fix is unavoidably obvious, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to post it here too. (Thank Finn, everybody, for sniffing this one down!)

From him:

"Edited !!!

In order to have the correct MFD and HUD gauges (HUD with targetbox), please follow these instructions:

Please only do the following, if You are confident working with files and folders !!!

Steps:

1. Navigate into: Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Simobjects\airplanes\Aerosoft F-16C Clean\Panel\ folder

2. Rename the 3 folders "Viper", "HUD" and "MFD" to something like: "Viperx", "HUDx" and "MFDx"

3. Navigate into: Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Simobjects\airplanes\Aerosoft F-16A 9\Panel\ folder

4. Select the 3 files Viper.cab, HUD.cab and MFD.cab

5. Copy these 3 files

6. Paste them into the: Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Simobjects\airplanes\Aerosoft F-16C Clean\Panel\ folder

Assure that the gauge06=LMFD has been enabled again in the panel.cfg, if You have disabled it (SP2 users).

A Hotfix is beeing prepared, so if Your not 100% sure how to work with files and folders, please wait !!

Finn"
