Following Aerosoft's recommendation, I bought an ATI 4850 for FSX. While it is a superb card regarding landscape and planes, it is - at least on my system - a nightmare when it comes to clouds. Framerates drop from 40fps under clear skies to 8fps with an overcast sky.

I am sure that Aerosoft wouldn't recommend this card if this was a common problem, so I suppose it has something to do with settings/drivers (I am using the latest catalyst drivers, 8.10).

Could other pilots tell me how their 4850 performs and if and how they have solved this problem?

Hello Darem,

What happens if you try Simple Clouds instead of 3D Clouds.

No negatrive impact on framerates. But they look bland - an overcast sky with simple coulds is far from being overcast. No cloud layers. no IFR conditions...

This is indeed a very common problem with the 4xxx (and older) ATI cards and I'm afraid to say that the only "fix" is to upgrade the gpu.
