pauldgardner 2
Hi,I am enjoying the superb F-16 and its features, but I am having trouble understanding the HUD viewing funtions/ options. The manual is good but lack sufficient detail in the HUD area to explain the use of ther various HUD switches, what they are for and when to use them.I am sure many experienced flight simmers understand all of this but maybe I am not alone in needing some further explanation.Any chance of some help?CheersPaul Link to comment https://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/20851-hud-settings-options/ Share on other sites
Aerosoft Aerosoft Team [Inactive Account] 51562 Posted October 28, 2008 Aerosoft Share Posted October 28, 2008 Mmmm I see what you mean but at the same time I find it hard to explain what should be used for what and in what occasion. Give me some time to think this over.To see what the switches do is not very complex, just put the aircraft on a runway and open a second VC window. Now you can control the switches and directly see what the effect is. See the attached image how I do it. We had enough of an issue getting 14 degrees of symbology on there vertically, and there just was not room for 3 additional lines of text, even when converting the bank scale from the standard bottom type to the one that's referenced (attached) to the flight path marker. Or maybe it can be added so that's possible? For TrackIR users, it wouldn't be a problem to take a quick glance at it I'm definitely a future TrackIR user. Link to comment https://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/20851-hud-settings-options/#findComment-128390 Share on other sites
saprintz 82
Can you see the DED data by moving your eyepoint? Or maybe it can be added so that's possible? For TrackIR users, it wouldn't be a problem to take a quick glance at it I'm definitely a future TrackIR user. Even with TrackIR, or shifting the eyepoint up manually, there's no way to avoid what we called a "cone of visibility," which Stefan and Mathijs did a wonderful job of expanding as far as it could go. It's difficult to explain, and believe me there was TONS of internal discussion on this, but basically, the (very cool, and unprecedented!!) collimation effect that was implemented in this F-16 means that there had to be something akin to a fixed mask in the HUD glass. And near the bottom of the glass, visibility ends a little below the bank angle scale, at the lowest, no matter how far up the eyepoint is shifted.Trust me, I tried to get it on there. It can be done if the DED data font is reduced to an unrealistic, and frankly somewhat ugly size, but then I'm not sure the benefits of having it outweigh the costs. The other HUD symbology, which is very realistic, does not accomodate such a look very well. Plus... we figured that the DED data is not quite as important as the primary HUD data, and the DED itself is already very close to the HUD... so, the level of redundance in having it there and the pretty unattractive way it would have to be fit in argued against its inclusion at all.Scott Link to comment https://forum.aerosoft.com/index.php?/topic/20851-hud-settings-options/#findComment-128395 Share on other sites

saprintz 82
Just to clarify something that may not be obvious:"VAH"This means show the Velocity, Altitude and Heading TAPES."VV / VAH"This adds the vertical velocity scale, as stated. In other words, you can have the tapes by themselves, but not the vertical velocity scale. It'll only show up if the VAH tapes have already been added.
